From 2009 to 2011 M G Walker worked on a series of complex, figurative, fine line drawings and prints based on the Spanish play "Life is a Dream" by Calderon de la Barca.
The images, and Calderon’s play, explore the subtle boundaries between our dream life and waking life, creating at times familiar yet fanciful human narratives.
15 drawings were made in the series. The dimensions of each drawing are 24 by 48 inches and form one continuous drawing when placed end to end.
M G Walker selected details from two drawings in the sequence in which the fertility god, Priapos is featured. Priapos is a fertility god in the Greek Pantheon who is the protector of fishermen and the male sexuality.
The original brush and ink drawings were created for the print format. As a printmaker, I sometimes use the drawings as “plates” from which a limited edition of prints will be made.
